The rotation is similiar to a backflip 180 except on a different more flat axis.

thats the best way to describe it to people but i dont think it's not how you do them.

Watch Eito do a flat spin and watch Shane do one. They are quite different. It's pretty much you turn so your body is flat, do a backflip parelle to the ground. A flat 3 is a lot like a fakie bio without the first 180.
A regular 540 on vert you have to beside ways a bit for the vert, some people like Eito when they flat 540 are really straight up and down and then get side ways when they come back in for entry. Find footage of his flat 5 and Shane's and slow motion them. you'll see what I'm saying.

look at my post on the "hover flip" thread. it has the definition of a flatspin, i got it from toxboe.net. maybe that could help a little bit.
