crash pads help a lot, just dont wear tight pants or else it looks kind of funky
to me crash pads seem like training wheels. granted, pads do save your ass when you fall, but they dont really help you get better. the only defense you have against falling, is skill. no amount of padding will save you from THE fall. i dont wear pads when i skate street. i remember when i was learning handrails. my shins were chewed up, lumpy and bloody for a while. but eventually, i stopped falling on grinds. pain is an excellent teacher. if you keep falling on tricks, and it hurts, you'll do whatever it takes to make sure you never feel pain again. if you wear pads, falling doesnt hurt that much, and you wont learn from your mistakes.

On vert there are many times where there will be no way out but to slide out, and having crash pads makes the slide much better and keeps you from getting hurt which lets you get better quicker.
